Phlebotomy Technician (Hours 120)

Brief Course Description: This competency-based course is designed to fulfill the training requirements to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1) for the state of California. The class consists of theory, skills lab preparation, and clinical experiences. Students will be trained in: introduction, equipment and supplies, workplace safety, infection control, legal issues, communication, anticoagulation theory, anatomy and physiology, patient identification, skin puncture preparation, post-puncture care, sources of error, risk factors and appropriate responses, complications and correction of actions, quality assurance, dermal puncture, venipuncture, employability skills and résumé preparation.

The competencies in this course are aligned with the California High School Academic Content Standards and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards, and is approved by the State of California, Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services.

Clinical externship facilities or employers may require students to take additional lab work or tests, background check, and/or drug screening.

Completion of MOA 1: Medical Terminology course is highly recommended.

    • STEP Orientation
    • High School Diploma or Equivalency
    • Evidence of Vaccination
      • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B series, Rubeola, Varicella
    • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) certification
    • TB clearance and physical exam
  • Reading Assessment Requirement: Yes | 228 or higher on CASAS GOALS reading assessment
  • Math Assessment Requirement: Yes | 8th grade or higher per CASAS GOALS math assessment
  • STEP Orientation: Yes

Separate costs for books, exams, supplies, preparation, certifications and/or licenses provided by outside vendors may be incured.

Once a Certificate of Completion is earned in a course, that course cannot be repeated.
