Program Overview

The Building & Grounds Worker Program is a continuum of competency-based courses that prepares trainees for entry-level supervisory positions of school custodial staff. Instruction includes practical training in the management of custodial personnel; in-depth understanding of time and motion studies; equitable workload scheduling; scheduling of routine cleaning; scheduling of non-routine cleaning. Training in principles of supervision, inspection of buildings and grounds, record keeping, and management of personnel is provided.

The competencies in all of the following courses are aligned with the California High School Academic Content Standards and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.

Building and Grounds Worker: Fundamentals (60 hours)

Brief Course Description: This competency-based course prepares trainees for entry-level employment as school custodians, upgrades skills, and prepares employees for promotion.

Maintenance Supervisor: Computer Essentials Practices (60 hours)

Brief Course Description: This competency-based course is designed to prepare students with basic computer fundamentals using the latest software in operating systems, word processing, and spreadsheets. Emphasis will be placed on virtual communication platforms such as email, Zoom, and other online applications. Additionally, this course will include soft skills, employability skills, job search, and résumé preparation.

Maintenance Supervisor: Heating and Ventilation (60 hours)

Brief Course Description: This competency-based course prepares trainees to operate various heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. Instruction includes principles and techniques of various low-pressure boiler operations, fuel systems, unit heating systems, ventilation systems, and air conditioning systems.
